Destination Tokachi

Toyokoro Town

In 1897, Ninomiya Sonshin (grandson of Ninomiya Sontoku), who played a large role in the development of Toyokoro, ariived from Fukushima Prefecture with a party from Kofukusha and settled in the Ninomiya District. Otsu is considered the point from which the Tokachi area originated since many settlers settled in the Tokachi area after traveling up the Tokachi River from there.
The symbol of Toyokoro Town, a large Japanese elm tree, is a popular tourist attraction having been shown on television and in picture books. Heading out to the ocean from the banks of the Tokachi River, visitors can find wild flower gardens blooming along the coastline as well as Chobushi Lake and Lake Yudonuma. Red-crowned cranes and white-tailed eagles can be seen in the summer and seals can sometimes be seen in the winter. Please, enjoy the rich natural environment of Toyokoro Town.
So-called jewelry ice, the large floating chunks of ice from the Tokachi River which have emptied into the Pacific Ocean and glitter brilliantly with the rays of the morning sun, is a popular tourist attraction that is visible from the Otsu Coast from mid-January to late-February.
