The town of Makubetsu, known as the birthplace of park golf and as the place where Naumann elephant fossils were discovered, is a place where visitors can enjoy beautiful scenery such as cows grazing on enormous farms just one step outside of the downtown area. Makubetsu is where the nationally popular sport of park golf, a game that anyone can easily enjoy, originated. There are 14 courses throughout the town, both public and privately operated, brimming with enthusiasts.
